Wine tasting may not seem very appealing from its name, but it is most important aspect of the wine procedure. Once a person gets into this habit, they will always love to go to a wine tasting vacation, or give wine tasting parties, join groups or clubs for wine tasting where they get to discover new wines and tastes. They will love to meet people who can discuss wines.
Let’s come to the aspect of wine tasting, what are its features and how to do it.
- Vision: one has to see the wine clearly to identify it. One can say, wine tasting starts from the eyes and ends in mouth. First the person tasting the wine needs to hold the glass in clear light and look for its color, clarity. A good wine is always clear and vibrant in color. All wines show gradation of colors, like red wines can be ruby-red, gem-red, purple, tinge of brown, shades of pink, various shades of red like brick red. Same goes for while wine, it is not always pure white it can be light green, shades of yellow, color of straw etc.
- Aroma/smell: firstly what is aroma. It’s an interface between air and wine that produces aroma. It is a very important aspect of wine tasting. To do this give the glass a swirl and then bring the wine in front of your nose and take a good sniff, and get the smells which are generally related to fruits, earthy scents. As and when wine ages, its aroma can change.
- Taste: now it’s your taste bud that has to do their job. The ultimate tasting part of wine is taste of the wine. To do this take a mouthful of wine and move it inside your mouth a bit strongly. After doing it for 10 to 20 seconds, spit it out, or swallow if you want. Now your tongue gets the proper taste. It is the taste that you have after swallowing or spiting that counts the most. It can be sweet, bitter, stale, sour. It’s this phase where the acidity level and tannins are evaluated.
After all these steps are accomplished, it is time for the conclusion. But one cannot say that it’s a right wine or wrong wine. It mainly depends on ones taste and desire. People describe it as per their perception. Tasting is mainly meant to encourage your own frame of references for wine that you will drink in the future.
