Finding the Best Wine Opener

by Patricia Fioriello on July 30, 2009

Wine doesn’t always come with a twist-off bottle cap or a pull tab that allows for easy access, so a wine opener becomes a necessity.

There are many different types of openers as there are wines. They fall into a handful of general categories.

Regular Corkscrew: Portable, easily stored, can be a beautiful piece of art, a gift, or heirloom.

The Waiter’s Corkscrew: A good waiter’s wine opener is an indispensable tool for sommeliers and other wine professionals.  It’s easy to use, fits in your pocket and very portable.  These are among the cheaper wine openers and can cost as little as $10.

The Screw pull Corkscrew: This wine opener has essentially all metal body with metal rack and pinion.  A simple device that looks like a clothespin is coupled with clockwise twisting.

The Winged Corkscrew: It consists of a corkscrew attached to a frame with two long arms which pivot upwards as the cork is screwed in (hence the name winged).  This device makes uncorking a bottle easier than a typical cork puller. It is a great choice for the home user or anyone that does not wish to wrestle with a wine bottle. The cost of this type of wine opener can range from $10 to $50.

Ah-so:  It is simply a handle with two metal blades. One basically slides the blades on either side of the cork and then slowly pries it out.

Uncorking Machines:  It provides a way of opening bottles using a stand.  An apparatus is used that is kept on top of the stand which either has a manual or electric-powered mechanism that screws into the cork or easily removes it.

Tabletop Wine Opener: Easy to use, like the lever wine opener above. Plus, it will look really cool in your kitchen, or in your bar.  The table top wine opener can be more expensive than others.

• The Rabbit Corkscrew:  It is faster than a speeding bunny.  It pulls a cork in 3 seconds flat. It works well with all types of wine bottles including the flanged-rim bottles. Just place the rabbit on the wine bottle, pull the lever in and out, and your bottle of wine is open without getting bits of cork in your wine. The cost of these wine openers can be pretty steep, ranging from $30 to over $100, but they make opening a bottle a breeze.
