Finding the Right Words to Describe Wine

There are so many words to describe wine, which are used by professional wine tasters. However, for the most part, there is no such thing as one perfect wine tasting dictionary. Some descriptions may contain different meanings when used by different tasters. But to get you on the same understanding with them when reading their notes or writing your own professional type of tasting notes, read on and discover some of the words to describe wine.

There are dozens of words to describe wine. Some of them are borrowed from tasting foods, such as fruit, for instance. We’ll take a look at only few of them. Here are some of the most common words to describe wine:

Acetic means tasting a bit like vinegar.

Acidic means the concentration of acid is too high.

Aromatic means there are notable fruit scents and strong aroma.

Balanced means the acid and alcohol level, fruit scents, sugar, tannins, etc. are all in perfect balance and harmony.

Big means it is capable of producing an unforgettable impression with its balance of alcohol, acids, fruit flavor and other characteristics.

Bitter means it leaves unpleasant aftertaste and it might mean that it contains too much tannins.

Character means it is expressive and the impressions last for long time.

Clean means perfect in regards to its taste and aroma.

Complex means it is really good and contains several flavors, such as fruit or spice. You discover these flavors one after another, which makes wine tasting unforgettable.

Of course, the list of words to describe wine can go on and on – the same as there is no end to the flavors and tastes of a good bottle to drink. The more experience you get, the more sophisticated your descriptions will become. Tasting wine is a unique experience and every person can find the right words to describe the impression it leaves on his or her soul and mind.
