Not all alcohol is bad for health, like for example red wine can be beneficial to our health. It has anti–oxidant quality which makes it most beneficial.

Resveratrol is a powerful anti-oxidant that acts with vitamin C increasing the effects of each other. It is one of the polyphenol present in red wine, which behaves like Calorie Restriction Diet (CR.)

There is a chemical called resveratrol that is partially responsible for red wines’ health benefits. It is produced naturally by grapes skins when reacted with fungus, and exposed to yeast during fermentation.

It is also called a phytoalexin as produced naturally by plants. It is found more in red wine than in white wine because the processing of while wine skin of grapes is already removed.

Red wine is now being researched at every medical school because it has resveratrol present in it. For example, a Harvard Medical School professor says after research that “The red wine chemical resveratrol can extend the life of every organism we give it to.”

Major benefits of resveratrol

  • It has anti-clotting effect that avoids the formation of blood clots or thrombi in the blood vessels that in turns prevents cancer and strokes.
  • Reduces tumor development in some form of cancers.
  • Prevents damage to blood vessels.
  • Reduces “bad” cholesterol called as low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as it increases cardio problems.
  • It increases HDL cholesterol that helps in preventing blood clots.
  • They are good to extend exercise tolerance, and also help to reduce memory loss.
  • It supports in the creation of nerve cells that may be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. It promotes the formation of new dendrites in the brain.
  • Helps to protect from obesity and diabetes, both of which are strong risk factors for heart disease.
  • Red wine has an anti-coagulating effect which is due to resveratrol present in it.
  • Resveratrol can reduce the risks of colorectal cancer.
  • It boosts the immune system and hence increases life span. Resveratrol also have anti-aging properties.

The amount of resveratrol in red wine can differ on basis of growing seasons and types of grapes. It can vary between 0.2 to 5.8 milligrams per litre. Practically all dark red wines like shiraz, merlot, pinot noir, cabernet, zinfandel contains resveratrol.  Hence drinking these wines in moderate level can reduce possible health problems.
