Order Wine and Impress Your Dinner Guest

Order wine and impress your dinner guest

Dinner without a wine will always make you feel that you are missing something.  So it’s always good to choose a wine bottle at dinner that will go along with the food that you have ordered.

Mainly what we know is that strong and bold wines go well with strongly flavored foods and milder wines go with more delicately flavored food items.

Like Bordeaux, Burgundy, Cabernet goes well with spicy Italian food, steak, barbecue ribs etc.  Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc goes well with fish, spicy chicken or veal dish.  Merlot and Zinfandel compliments all variety of food

You can experiment with a few combinations yourself, though sometime it may go bad, but you can also find some good combination for yourself. There can never be a fixed rule for wine selection.  It depends on your taste buds. For example a friend of mine loves Cabernet with barbecue chicken.  Sounds a bit unusual but it’s her taste and preference.

Sometime you may not like the combination, you can re-cork it and use it the next day with different kind of food.  It will surely not be a waste if you apply proper preservation technique.

When ordering a wine at a restaurant, always order in moderate quantity, because if you don’t like it, it will go to waste, unless you order for whole lot of people.  Generally a bottle of wine of 750 ml is enough to serve 3 people if drinking in moderation.  Always check the label and producer of wine on the bottle.  When the waiter opens it for you, you should also check its cork.  No need to smell it like a detective but at least see its color which will give you an idea if is it good or stale.  Also if it’s wet then it means the wine was stored properly, but if dry it indicates the wine is flawed.

Most restaurants offer you a sip of wine to taste first.  So it’s good to take a small sip in the beginning before pouring all its quantity to make sure that it’s good. If you find it is good only then ask the waiter to pour it into all the glasses.

People like to experiment with wine, but sometimes it can be disastrous. If you have some knowledge about wine you can experiment but people with no knowledge about wine should go for the regular ones. If you prefer red ones, go for varieties in red only.
