
Red wine can be dry as well as fruity. They are basically sweet in taste and some people call it sweet red wine, but in actual sense they are not sweet wine. Instead, they have fruity flavor as sweetness in a red wine is often considered a flaw.
This is the reason a red wine can be classified as fruity, but not sweet. Generally dessert wine or port is called as sweet wine.
A fruity red wine is basically a light style wine with fruit flavors.
Some of the fruity red wines are:
Garnacha: it has a dried and dark fruitiness to it. It is a wine from Spain, but popular in the southern Rhone region of France and Australia as well. It has a counterpart called Grenache that comes from France. Made out of Grenache grapes, that love hot and dry weather. It has thin skin and high ripeness level. This grape is also used to make delicious and dry rose wines. It is a full bodied wine because of its high sugar content. It has low acid level and tannin. Due to this it is a good blender. Basic flavors of Grenache are spice, jam, dried fruit, some pepper, and earthiness.
Carmenere: it has various terms of fruitiness to it. However, the most popular ones have characteristics of dried raspberries with a hint of chocolate. Made out of Carmenere grapes that come from the Bordeaux blend. It was brought to France in 1800s from Chile. Earlier Chileans thought it to be Merlot and named it as Merlot, but in nineties it was cleared that it is different from Merlot and labeled as Carmenere. It was known to be a Chilean jewel as it was backbone of many other Chilean wines. This wine has a heady dose of spice and pepper.
Beaujolais: it is a light bodied wine full of fruit flavor. It is one of the most popular fruity red wine. It is produced in Eastern France. It has characteristic fruity flavor and known for being a fresh tasting red wine. It has a low level of alcohol content. This wine doesn’t need much maturing. In fact, it is best served when young. They are generally made of Gamay grapes. It is one of the most un-oaked red wines.
