
Red wines are by and large not called “sweet” but they may be categorized as “fruity.”
When we say sweet red wine according to he world of wine we do not mean sweet like candy instead we mean a fruitier wine. There are many red wines that are on the sweeter side.
Sweet red wines are those red wines that are light bodied and have fruity flavor. So when you see a label saying bright forward fruit flavor, it is definitely referring to a red wine that is sweet. Red sweet wines are best served chilled as an after dinner drink.
Sweet red wines are made from the skins and seeds during the fermentation, just like any other red wine. The only difference is that the sweet red wine fermentation process is stopped before all its sugar has been used by the yeast, which in turn makes the wine sweet.
Few major characteristics of a sweet red wine are that they are fruity in flavor, light bodied, young and not dry.
Types of sweet red wines
Fortified Wines like Port wines, Sherry and Madeira and Late Harvest Wines like Late Harvest Zinfandel.
Port Wines are the sweetest red wines. They are fortified and best as an after dinner drink. Port wines are higher in alcohol content from a regular wine.
These are a few types of port wines.
- Ruby – they are bright garnet in color with intense and forward fruit flavor.
- Tawny – they are amber in color and tend to take on a nutty flavor.
- Vintage – they have smooth and mellow flavors that grow with age.
Other sweet red wines
White zinfandel – it’s a sweet red wine with a taste like sugary soda.
Lambrusco – it is an Italian wine with fresh blackberry and plum flavors.
Beaujolais – it is a French wine with fruity flavor. Its sweetest form is called Beaujolais Nouveau.
Sweet red wines have approximately 50 to 100 grams of sugar per liter that is mostly glucose and fructose. Though it contains all the benefits of red wine like having qualities of being antioxidant and containing required polyphenols, the only difference is that it is high in sugar content and can be bad for diabetics.
