When we serve wine, do we consider what we are serving the wine in? It is an important wine etiquette to know that each type of wine is served in its special type of glass.
The size, color and shape of a wine glass can considerably affect one’s opinion about the wine that’s present in it.
Glasses used for drinking wine
- Port wine and Brandy: Sherry glasses are used. They are narrow glasses which promotes the aroma.
- Sparkling wine: A flute long stemmed slender glass is used as the straight design keeps bubbles longer in the glass.
- Red wine: Mainly two types of glasses are used. Both having a wide and rounder top that allows more oxygen to penetrate, which increases oxidation rate that softens the flavor. This is to allow you to plunge your nose into the glass to detect aroma of the wine.
Burgundy wine glasses
They are mainly used for wine like Pinot Noir. These glasses are curved at the top and the rim is turned out to direct the strong flavors right away to the palette. These glasses direct the wine to the tip of tongue. The stem is shorter than other red wine glasses. They have a blown up tulip shape that is sometimes called a balloon.
Bordeaux wine glasses
They are used for wines like Merlots and Cabernets. These glasses are tall with a broader bowl and slightly tapered top that directs the wine back to mouth. The stem is of regular length and the base is wider than other red wine glasses.
The main producer of specific wine glasses is the company Riedel which has its origin in Australia. They are wonderful, expensive and worth investing in!

How to select a correct wine glass
To select a correct wine glass is not very tough job. There are few rules, just follow them.
- Choose transparent materials like fine glass or crystal.
- Avoid colored or frosted or metal variety of glasses as color of wine must be prominent.
- Stem should be adequate size that makes holding the glass comfortable.
- Size of the bowl should be sufficient as to allow a respectable measure of wine to be poured.
- Shape of the bowl is an important factor. A correct glass should peter out towards the top with an edge fairly smaller than portion of the body.
